Minsk – Prvým zápasom sezóny 2008/2009 bolo vystúpenie našich futbalistov v bieloruskom Minsku, kde nastúpili v rámci 1. predkola Pohára UEFA proti domácemu MTZ Ripo. Do stretnutia vstúpili lepšie domáci, keď skórovali už v 17. minúte zásluhou Camaru, no po krásnom lobe z polky ihriska vyrovnal štyri minúty pred koncom polčasu Vladavič, ktorý “nachytal na hruškách” bieloruského gólmana. V druhom polčase padali góly už len z pokutových kopov, keď najskôr domácich dostal v 51. minúte do vedenia 2:1 Seolin, no na konečných 2:2 upravil v 98. minúte z jedenástky Robo Jež. Žilina sa tak priblížila k postupu do ďalšej fázy druhej najprestížnejšej klubovej pohárovej súťaže starého kontinentu.
Na stretnutí bolo 8000 divákov, z toho zhruba tridsiatka zo Žiliny, ktorú však prevažne tvorili zamestnanci klubu či rodinní príslušníci. Podporiť MŠK však priamo na štadióne prišla aj žilinská rodáčka, basketbalová trénerka Natália Hejková, ktorá tu bola na sústredení so svojím tímom.
